Sandy, a Scot, came to New Zealand as a child, where he was educated at Whakatane High School. He has worked in the media for much of his adult career, and has written many articles and several books. With a lifelong interest in science, he is a member of the Royal Society. Judy was born in Blenheim and trained
there and in London as a nurse. She was a foundation member of the
Emergency Care and Disaster Nursing Association of New Zealand. She has
written many articles on outdoor topics.
